our thoughts

Just got back from seeing Mission Impossible III which I thoroughly enjoyed – it’s a roller coaster ride from start to finish and is by far the best action/blockbuster movie I’ve seen recently.

But the best bit of all? All the tonne of easter eggs and in-joke references to other JJ Abrams tv shows that he’s done.

From Keri Russell having a bit part in the movie, music snippets from Lost, to Greg Grunberg (who has been in Alias, Lost and Felicity) having a cameo role, the call sign “Outrigger” being used (Dixon’s in Alias), the Rambaldi artifact reference, the Marshall-clone techy guy and much much more. The last episode of Alias had a guy with a bomb implanted in his head and the movie has this too – not quite the same, but similar enough to know it’s no co-incidence in cross-promoting Alias. Oceanic Airlines pops up and so does the “Hanso Foundation” from Lost.

Every few minutes we were nudging each other and giggling over the references. Brilliant JJ.

PS New Zealand’s Lake Wanaka is mentioned a couple of times in the movie :)

As a huge Alias fan it sounds like I might have to go see this. How about last night’s Alias episode? Is anyone going to be left alive by the end of the show?!

I haven’t seen it yet, but I do plan to do so. However, I’m concerned, by your review, that this movie is going to be picking up alot of plot devices from other shows that I wonder how much of it will be exciting and original?

Besides the fact that Tom is overexposed at this time, I think it’ll be something worthy to see in regards to rounded greated cast.

Looking forward to this roller coaster then.

Hi Donna,

The story itself is highly improbable but that’s what people like with the Mission Impossible/James Bond movies. The stunts/action scenes are great and I didn’t find them unoriginal :)

Oooh I saw it last night. And yes, it was a non-stop roller coaster and definitely worth seeing in the big screen.

One of the things that really came through was the emotional chemistry between Tom and Michelle. In my opinion, out of all 3 movies, this was the strongest in terms of being emotionally captivating.

The stunts/action scenes were pretty strong. Sometimes I get jaded in regards to action movies because they tend to use so much special effects. But yes, overall, it was a fun movie.

I do have a gripe about the end but I don’t want to spoil it for the rest of yas.

I can’t believe they’ve shortened Alias to only 15 episodes. :’(

Hm, i absolutely didn’t like M:I:III – if they cut it down to 90 minutes and changed the main cast, it could have been an awesome two-part episode of Alias. As it was, it has bored me from beginning to end and the best parts where the references to the mentioned TV-shows…
