Great post, Rachel -- one of my favorite examples of a small-market (ok... long tail) blog is http://www.englishcut.com/, the blog of a Savile Row custom tailor. It's transformed his business.

I was wondering about this too. And after feeling let down I decided to take another persepctive which I wrote about on my blog and was featured on my network:

http://9rules.com/en/browse/featured/archive/179/

"But then I began to look at things in a different way: a 100 visitors a day. That’s (a lot) more than the number of people I talk to face-to-face in a day! In fact, that’s like having a room full of a 100 people for me to speak and share my thoughts with every single day. And these are people from all over the world.

First I went; “yikes!â€? and then; “yippee!â€?

Its mind-blowing: imagine the world as a potential audience."

It really is, the chance to speak to even a 100 people a day from all over the world is a great opportunity.

Good post, Rachel, I agree, my boss uses 'direct mail' which I have told him numerous times I disagree with as its just spam by another name. I'd far rather see clients take a positive approach through a blog that services customers needs in an interactive and more individual way. I'm hoping that he may agree to integrate a blog into our new project for a local sports car dealer, as I think that dialogue between customer and staff may help show that the staff are interested and passionate about what the cars, and make it a more personal experience, even if the numbers are low, as you say, its about reaching the right people.
