I totally agree with Pete, for me the first impression when I saw the site was – what a scam bag site is this. I doubt people will trust very much and want to donate to a site like this.

But from other side, we need to remember for what reason the site was created. I don’t think that tragedy like this needs a really fancy design. Of course the better look will more attractive, but it was created not to impress visitors, right? but for donation.

Plus, I think they wanted to launch the site very quickly..

That’s really messy, dated and has no impact at all. It reminds me of a “make money from home now – 100% genuine” type website. It really is bad form – as you say many designers would have done it for free and a website with better impact will surely help to raise more; just because the cause is charitable doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to be marketed.
