Blog treasure hunts

February 9, 2006

I’ve often wondered about doing these… has anyone?

Basically the idea would be to make up some cool cyptic clues which will take you from blog to blog via links on each site and you collect words or letters from posts along the way and end up with a secret URL to go to with a login/password. Then you enter your name/blog on the page for everyone after to see.

There wouldn’t have to be an actual prize (but that’d be cool)… the prize could be their name up in lights and a link to their blog. It’d be fun to do and you’d get to discover some (hopefully) cool blogs in the process!

What do you think? Would you take part in one? Thumbs up or down?

  2. Yeah, that sounds pretty cool. I’d participate.

  3. Interesting…With Site participations maybe a Treasure Chest Icon with a tooltip for a password/clue and special link to the next site…Some exquiste chains could be developed… But where does the time go? Time is money, Down.

  4. Actually, sounds fun. What blogger doesn’t like discovering new blogs, or rediscovering old ones?

  5. Sounds like a good idea… you could just place a special comment in a post from a past entry, and that would get people to dig through your blog to find it.

  6. Now that is a cool idea. A comment with a clue on an old post or a trackback even to the next site. That would keep the chain going. I am liking this idea more and more with every reply.

  8. Yep I’d take part.

  9. That sounds really cool! Something akin to NotPron perhaps, in that there could even be clues cleverly hidden in the source/template? Heh. I’d do it.

  10. I’d be down.

  12. I’d take part in a heartbeat. A kind of treasure hunt could be an interesting way of propagating ideas across blogs, too. This is the kind of playful experimentation that can result in useful tools down the road, too. I’m thinking of Where’s George site, which began as a novelty site for tracking the movement of dollar bills “just for fun” and ended up as a tool in the hands of epidemiologists. I think playing with toys is a great way to create space for innovation.

  13. I’ve come up with something. I think it should link back to Rachel’s blog, where she could keep a list of participants somewhere.

Here’s how it works … in a comment, or in a blog post, you can place a piece of text.

    For example:

Roll your mouse over **this piece of text**

Can you find the rest?Follow the blog treasure hunt

  14. Oops — looks like you disabled my ability to submit DIV and SPAN tags…

You can see how it was meant to work here:

  15. I’d seen these a while back, but not for some time now. They used to do this as advertising promotions “back in the day”.
