Photo books
March 6, 2006
I’ve been looking for a way to print my photos in book form and I’m considering which is the best option.
So far I’ve come across Qoop, which is recommended by Flickr and integrated with it but I’ve read that you get better quality and more flexibility through My Publisher. I’ve heard Shutterfly, Lulu and Snapfish work well too.
Local pricing is just way too high (probably because it hasn’t taken off here) and I haven’t seen any hard copy books to be able to figure out what the actual quality is like so I’d love to know what your experiences have been with these companies (and others) - as long as they ship to New Zealand.
The most helpful comparison information I’ve come across to date is this post at Metafilter but with all the photography blogs out there, there’s gotta be a nice comparison somewhere?

New theme looks nice Rachel
thanks about your attention.

Rachel
Found out about you from reading TechCrunch.
I like your new colour theme.
Regarding the book publishing question, I think Lulu http://www.lulu.com offers a good platform.
The pricing is reasonable and they offer a decent distribution.
Have a good day

I think you should be aware of the differences in the manufacturers and the types of books made. At QOOP, we presently make softback standard sized books (two sizes) and minibooks (in three sizes). We’re a start-up so you’ll see our layout tools and product variety evolve fairly quickly. We’ve already made a number of changes to the books to match paper types and color specifications that make them much better than the first books out. We’ll be adding hardbacks in a variety of sizes to match to offerings of other manufacturers but we’ll keep our tools and templates web-based. Consumers really should look at a combination of factors: the layout, book size, binding type, and price point to find a book that suits their need. If you’d like to test our minibooks, which are new, send me an email and I’ll set you up.

If you’re a mac user, I’ve seen a couple books printed through apple’s service, and it’s pretty good. and iPhoto makes it about as easy as it gets.
