Getting real
March 7, 2006
Just downloaded my copy of Getting Real, the new e-book from 37 Signals. I’ve long-admired their ethos of keeping things simple (usable and practical) rather than bloated full of features you don’t need. (Oh, and their products are brilliant too.)
I don’t agree with everything they write but it’s always good food for thought over at their blog, Signal vs. Noise. I’ll write up some of my reflections on the book in the next few days, in light of how it applies to blog design and development.
I have one question about 37 Signals that’s been in the back of my mind for a very long time but I haven’t found the answer yet.
Isn’t the name 37 Signals paradoxical to their ethos?

hi Rachel:
Maybe the last paragraph in this article - “Is 37signals The New Google?” could answer your question

Looking forward to hearing your comments!! I had a look at the first “free” chapter and it had the phrase “getting real” in there so many times, i got dizzy. However, topic-wise, this is just the area my colleagues and I are looking to get into (web apps for psychologists) and would love to hear your thoughts

Ahh, thanks yoren - now I know where the name comes from, but it seems like they just chose it because it seems cool… but strangely is at odds with their whole philosophy of keeping it small and simple…
Will write up some thoughts tomorrow night gareth
