Everyone’s blogging about the new Google Trends tool which enables you to see popularity of search terms over time. While you don’t see the actual numbers of queries, it’s helpful to see patterns, or compare search terms on a relative scale.

Two plots of specific interest to me:

Fascinating to note that in May 2004, MovableType 3.0 was released, along with licensing for the first time which is almost precisely when Wordpress became a more popular search phrase than MovableType. Ever since, MovableType has been on a downward trend while Wordpress has taken off. I hardly design any blogs these days in MovableType.

I started using Drupal and using it on various sites at the start of 2005, when interest sharly peaked. It’s a great tool if you’re looking for more than a blog to manage your content.

Ok, well not quite yet but Zoomin is the next best thing and it’s my new favourite map site for New Zealand. While there’s currently no businesses listed, it’s so handy for quickly finding street addresses. I used to use NZ Maps – but that only covered Auckland.

Zoomin

So much has changed in the five years since NZ Maps was created.

Zoomin offers the following advantages:

  • Intelligent search – while I type in a street name, possbile matches appear (each with its suburb) with quick links for me to click.
  • Just enough information – rather than listing each street name on a map (like traditional paper-based maps), only main roads are shown until I zoom in closer. The address I’m looking for is conveniently marked – rather than having to try and spot the street, then guess where the number might be on it. This makes map viewing seem so simple. When I’m at the street level, I’m provided with a list of other street numbers below the map which I can quickly click on.
  • Quick to respond – as I zoom in or out, scroll up or down the page usually doesn’t need to reload – thanks to some handy AJAX behind the scenes. As a result, I’m waiting around less.
  • Informative URLs -

URLs follow the pattern: Region – City/Town – Street – Number
  • Nice design – I firmly believe simple is beautiful.

Great to see a Kiwi company producing useful web products.

Google mail… the real kind

Sitting in the mail box today came a Happy New Year card from Google! I’m impressed that it arrived at the right time – the first day of mail delivery of the New Year.

I’ve now got a Google t-shirt (“I’m feeling lucky” is on the back), Google pens and a Google card. I was wondering what other Google items exist because Darren over at Problogger recently showed a picture of the Adsense Christmas gift that went out to some of the biggest publishers and then I found…. Google Store which I never knew existed. You can now brand everything – from baby’s first clothing to dog’s leashes – with Google.
