Photo books

I’ve been looking for a way to print my photos in book form and I’m considering which is the best option.

So far I’ve come across Qoop, which is recommended by Flickr and integrated with it but I’ve read that you get better quality and more flexibility through My Publisher. I’ve heard Shutterfly, Lulu and Snapfish work well too.

Local pricing is just way too high (probably because it hasn’t taken off here) and I haven’t seen any hard copy books to be able to figure out what the actual quality is like so I’d love to know what your experiences have been with these companies (and others) – as long as they ship to New Zealand.

The most helpful comparison information I’ve come across to date is this post at Metafilter but with all the photography blogs out there, there’s gotta be a nice comparison somewhere?

We’ve run into a problem though.

It’s cheaper to send photos via PXT (MMS) messages (charged a fixed price), rather than via email (charged per data transferred) so we PXT the photo to our secret-squirrel Flickr email address but it doesn’t seem to allow for a subject… hence the reason why this post originally didn’t have a title.

Is there a way around this?

Managing digital photos

We’re in the final stages of booking our airfares for our month-long trip to South America in June/July and I’ve been thinking about how people manage their digital photos on trips. It’ll be the first big trip I’ve done where I’ll be taking a digital camera, rather than my trusty SLR. (more…)

Colour combinations

Bad colors

Yesterday we headed along to Kathmandu for their annual 50% off sale to get some gear for our trips to Abel Tasman and South America. On the way there, I was compelled to take this photo. Every time we drive past it the colour combinations make me cringe. This large shopping building was recently repainted from a pale tint of grey to this ugly brown colour. Why oh why didn’t someone put a white background area in behind the logos, even if they didn’t want the whole building that colour?

On a brighter note, we celebrated the New Year in last night by heading out to Muriwai beach and checked out the Gannet Colony with friends and saw some far prettier colours. The place was so quiet and peaceful and not many people had come out.
