I recently received this comment in response to a quote for designing and building a WordPress site. It immediately brought to mind a brilliant ad by the clothing brand I Love Ugly, where they cleverly turned a negative one-star review into a promotion for their pants.
It’s true – you can always find someone willing to do a job for less, or even for free. While it might seem like a bargain, the reality is that you often get what you pay for. Almost everyone has heard of a website project that turned into a nightmare – the job never got completed, the person disappeared, the site didn’t work properly, it was a mess, there was no support, and making changes became a hassle.
When you want the best, you’re willing to invest in quality, peace of mind, support, and experience.
The I Love Ugly ad reminded me of Jimmy Kimmel’s signature segment where celebrities read “Mean Tweets” written by regular people, set to the tune of REM’s “Everybody Hurts.” Like the ad, this segment took something negative and turned it into a moment of humor and relatability.
It also brought to mind an older ad campaign for the original TV series Gossip Girl, which paired harsh negative reviews of the show (“Every parent’s nightmare,” “Mind-blowingly inappropriate”) with provocative images of the characters, evoking a sense of mischievous curiosity. You can see an example of the posters here.
These examples all demonstrate the power of flipping negativity on its head.
So, back to the comment, “Plenty of people on Fiverr and Upwork for less than half the price” – yes, there are cheaper options out there, and we make no apologies for that.
